Rugby Klub Bratislava vs Rugby Club Piestany – Slovak league

SK version (English version follows)

To bolo naozaj škoda a kvôli tomu bolo RKB nútené hrať 11 proti 12.

ENG version

On Sunday we were welcomed by Rugby Union Pieštany to play against them at their beautiful home pitch. Due to temperatures again exceeding normal expectations and coupled with some last minute withdrawals it was mutually agreed to play 2 halves consisting for 30 minutes with the usual 10 minute interval at half time.

We were expecting to be at full strength bolstered by numbers from local sides but, unfortunately with reliability the way it is in these parts, we were let down at the 12th hour as our support members failed to show. This was indeed a shame and due to this RKB was forced to play 11 vs 12 for the lion’s share of the match with the home coach refusing to equalise numbers to make the contest fair – typical poor sportsmanship ‘to win at all cost’ mentality which unfortunately is more the rule rather than the exception and goes against the very spirit of rugby.

The Squad was as follows:

  • Forwards: Landro, Porcaro, Sadcikov, Paquier, Camacho
  • Backs: Cimetiere, Clarke (C), Washington, Kompas, Surgos, Renard
  • Trainer: Hyatt-Khan

Kick-off was at 14:00 promptly, and due to the paucity of players on both sides it was apparent from the outset that there would be lots of running, with the usual impact usage of forwards making yards with go forward ball and each time trying to stretch the other wide with use of centers and wingers to good effect.

It was a tale of two halves with RKB utterly dominating the first stanza scoring 3 tries and leaving a couple out there also and the morale was high but it was apparent players fitness’s were being tested to the limits in the heat and doubling up in defence.

The Defensive line was pretty strong even with less players on the pitch but unfortunately for us, during the 2nd half, we lost our stamina and composure doing basics and our opponents were able to outnumber our defence in attack where they outscored the visiting team in the second half.

One yellow card was given to a “high tackle” front rower from Piestany, as well as wave after wave of consistent infringements around the ruck and maul areas. Piestany can count themselves lucky to earn such an ill deserved victory. RKB should walk away distraught not coming away with the win but know that practise and fitness need to be the key components of progression and improvement.

As usual the hospitality bestowed upon us by Pieštany post match were above and beyond the norm and we were all grateful for the experience.

Final score: PN 28 – RKB 24

  • Piešťany: Varga 23, Augustín T. 5
  • RKB: Clarke 10, Paquier 5, Porcaro 5, Cimetiere 4
